Fusion-coaching has worked with Graeme for 18 months after meeting at a warm weather camp in Lanzarote in 2008. What I saw was a guy who had been doing triathlon for a few years, was clearly talented but lacked structure, direction and progression. What really struck me however was Graeme’s mind – a guy with a thirst for knowledge who already knew more about training than many coaches due to his own reading, training and thinking. He’d already made a commitment to train with power and understood a lot of the basics of how to get good. We started working together and to some extent the rest is history. I don’t do anything that’s rocket science with the coaching. Good honest hard work that adheres to principles of consistency, analysis, progression etc. To date we have not raced lots due to the need to prepare and maintain consistency around full time work. Many folk are astounded by how well Graeme goes considering his full time – rightly so as I certainly know nobody who puts together as many hrs work and training with amazing consistency, drive and focus. Many good elites could learn a lot from this. At least the full time job means Graeme does not have to chase dollars racing here there and everywhere so training is always on track. I enjoy working with Graeme, he challenges me and makes me think a lot about training, coaching, pro vs amateur and the best way forwards. I know one thing for sure – he is good so far but there is a lot more to come. He’s also a bloody nice guy, good chat and still retains social skills that some elites badly lack!!
